DOAS (Dedicated Outside Air System) Units Improve Energy Efficiency

In recent years the world has become more focused on climate change issues. Concern for preserving our global resources has everyone looking for ways to promote sustainability and increase energy efficiency. In every industry, goals are focusing on responsible technologies and meeting regulatory compliance challenges to meet green objectives.

Like most industries, the HVAC industry has become increasingly focused on developing environmentally-friendly technologies and meeting energy efficiency standards. DOAS (Dedicated Outside Air System) units are a great example of an innovative solution that promotes energy savings.

How a DOAS Unit Works

The dedicated outdoor air system unit is commonly used with other HVAC equipment as part of a system. DOAS units work independently from heating or cooling operations, bringing fresh outdoor air into inside spaces. Separating ventilation air from heating and cooling improves indoor air quality and can also promote energy savings.

There are many benefits a dedicated outdoor air system can offer facilities. DOAS units are used in virtually every commercial building because they are cost-effective and help businesses comply with new commercial HVAC energy efficiency standards. DOAS units also work effectively as dehumidifiers, helping to prevent moisture-related problems such as mold growth and ‘sick building syndrome’

Koch Applied Solutions partners with United CoolAir Corporation (serving our Missouri and Illinois offices) to provide these dedicated outside air systems. United CoolAir engineers unique comfort cooling solutions based on an innovative modular packaged, all-indoor design concept.

The United CoolAir Alpha Aire unit is an outside air, self-contained DX system with an air source heat pump. Alpha Aire self-contained DOAS units have been designed for a quick and easy indoor installation, with no exterior mounting space needed. Indoor unit mounting does not impact the architectural integrity of the building and eliminates roof loads. Since the self contained unit is mounted in the ceiling, compressor change out is simple, promoting maintenance efficiency. As an added bonus, limited outdoor exposure of the equipment allows for security and protection from weather damage.

Alpha Aire Features:

  • 200 to 500 CFM
  • Horizontal or Vertical
  • Air-Source Heat Pump
  • Variable Air Volume (thru BMS)
